197 Union Square, at 197 Washington Street in Somerville, is a four-story condominium building with 30 residences, completed in 2016 a short walk from the center of Union Square.
Cathartes Private Investments developed the building, which topped off in late 2015 alongside a neighboring affordable housing project by the Somerville Community Corporation at 181 Washington Street. The two projects were planned together as part of the revitalization of Union Square. 197 Union Square has a contemporary exterior of fiber cement and metal panels, with a ground-floor commercial space, home to a cafe, and three floors of homes above.
Residences are one- and two-bedroom homes of about 630 to 1,190 square feet. Many have floor-to-ceiling windows, open layouts, hardwood floors, quartz or stone counters, stainless appliances, central air and in-unit laundry, and corner homes have windows on two exposures.
The signature amenity is the rooftop solar lounge, which opens onto a common roof deck with views of the Boston skyline. Residents also have a fitness center, an elevator, bike storage, private storage, a secure entry system and covered parking.
Union Square has become one of Somerville's busiest dining and arts districts, with Bow Market, independent restaurants and cafes, and a seasonal farmers market close by. The Union Square Green Line station is a few minutes away on foot, with direct service toward Lechmere and downtown Boston, and Kendall Square and other parts of Cambridge are a short ride or bike trip south. Lincoln Park is also nearby.
197 Union Square offers newer construction, a rooftop lounge and parking in the middle of one of Greater Boston's most active neighborhoods.
