Avenir

Avenir, at 101 Canal Street in Boston's West End, is a 10-story luxury apartment building with 241 residences, completed in 2009 directly above North Station.

The building stands in the Bulfinch Triangle and was the first to rise there after the elevated Central Artery came down. It sits on top of, and is partly supported by, the MBTA's North Station superstation, which opened in 2005 and moved the Green Line underground. Trinity Financial first planned the project as condominiums and repositioned it as rental housing in 2006. Archstone bought the plans in 2007 and built it, with construction running from June 2007 to July 2009. ICON architecture designed the building, Dimeo Construction managed construction, and Equity Residential now operates it.

To limit vibration from the tunnels below, the steel structure rests on neoprene isolation pads. The facade mixes brick, metal panels, curtain wall, and stone, with taller ends at the cross streets. Two levels of parking on the second and third floors are wrapped by two-story loft apartments, and the ground floor holds retail, including a CVS Pharmacy.

Apartments range from studios of about 550 square feet to three-bedroom homes of about 1,800 square feet, including close to 40 two-story lofts with 20-foot ceilings. Interiors feature granite counters with islands, stainless Energy Star appliances, Brazilian cherry floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, nine-foot ceilings, in-home washers and dryers, central heat and air conditioning, and smart locks and thermostats. Some homes have balconies or terraces.

Residents have a 24-hour concierge, a 24-hour fitness center, a rooftop deck with city views, resident lounges, a conference room, package service, bike storage, reserved parking, and valet dry cleaning. The building is pet friendly and smoke free.

Green and Orange Line trains stop directly below. TD Garden and The Hub on Causeway are about a block away, and Lovejoy Wharf, the Harborwalk, and the North End are a short walk.

For renters who want transit at the front door and a full amenity package, Avenir offers an easy base near North Station.
