The Whitwell

The Whitwell, at 28-32 Derne Street in Beacon Hill, is a six-story condominium building with 13 residences, completed in 2017 inside a former Suffolk University building steps from the Massachusetts State House.

Derne Street Partners bought the building from Suffolk University in July 2014 and carried out a gut renovation to create a boutique luxury condominium. The project was first planned for 14 homes, and the city's assessing records now list 13. The renovation gave each floor-through residence 12-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and separate living and dining areas.

Most residences have two or three bedrooms and about 1,850 to 2,500 square feet, according to city assessing records, and the upper floors hold two larger homes of about 3,650 and 6,100 square feet. The two penthouse units were first offered as a pair that could be combined into one residence of about 6,270 square feet, with a private landscaped terrace and panoramic views of the city. Interiors throughout use custom finishes.

An elevator runs directly to the building's garage, where parking is deeded, and residents share a landscaped terrace with city views. The building also offers concierge service.

Bowdoin station on the Blue Line is a few minutes' walk away, and Park Street station and Boston Common are close by. Cambridge Street and the West End lie just to the north, and Downtown is a short walk past the State House. The Claflin on Beacon Street is another Beacon Hill condominium nearby.

The Whitwell is one of Beacon Hill's newest boutique conversions, with floor-through homes and deeded parking inside the building.
