Welcome to Weston

Weston is a town in Middlesex County west of Boston, bordered by Waltham and Newton on the east and Wellesley on the south. Incorporated in 1713, it is known for its wooded, low-density landscape, its historic taverns and houses along the Boston Post Road, and a traditional town center around the Town Green.

About Weston

Weston began as the western edge of Watertown, an area called "the Farms" or the Farmers' District. It became Watertown's westernmost precinct in 1698 and was incorporated as a separate town in 1713, and in 1746 much of its northern section was set off to help form Lincoln. The Boston Post Road, today's Route 20, made the village a stop for travelers, and taverns such as the Josiah Smith Tavern of 1757 and the Golden Ball Tavern of 1768 still stand along it. The Golden Ball's owner, Isaac Jones, was a Loyalist, and patriots raided his tavern in 1774.

Railroads arrived in the 1840s, and from the late 1800s Bostonians built country estates across town, many designed by noted architects. The Weston Aqueduct and Reservoir were completed in 1903 as part of Boston's water supply. After Route 128 opened in 1951 and the Massachusetts Turnpike reached Weston in 1957, farms and estates gave way to new neighborhoods. Weston also borders Lincoln to the north and Natick and Wayland to the west.

Getting Around

Commuter rail trains on the Fitchburg Line stop at Kendal Green and Silver Hill on the way to North Station, and the Green Line's Riverside station is just over the Newton line. The Massachusetts Turnpike crosses the southern part of town and meets Route 128 and Interstate 95 in the southeast corner, while Route 20, Route 30, and Route 117 cross Weston from east to west.

Weston's housing is overwhelmingly single-family homes, most on large wooded lots, with a small number of attached homes and condominiums. The oldest houses are Georgian and Federal homes along the Boston Post Road, protected by the Boston Post Road Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, one of several historic districts in town. Shingle Style, Colonial Revival, and Tudor-influenced estate houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are scattered throughout, and smaller period houses cluster near the old railroad stations at the town center and Kendal Green. Most homes, though, date from the decades after World War II, when subdivisions filled in former farms and estates, and many of those houses have since been rebuilt or replaced with larger homes.

Living in Weston

The town center gathers the Town Green, the Colonial Revival Town Hall, the library, churches, and a small group of shops. The Golden Ball Tavern has been a museum since 1964 and hosts tours and programs.

Open space defines much of Weston. The Weston Forest and Trail Association, formed in 1955, maintains more than 100 miles of trails across town conservation land and its own preserves, and the Charles River runs along the eastern edge. The state's Leo J. Martin Memorial Golf Course on Park Road is an 18-hole public course that also hosts a ski track in winter.
